Papers, 1852-1914.

This collection contains a diary, with entries by Solomon, Maude, and Lyda Palmer, though the bulk of the diary contains entries made by Solomon. There are some clippings and cards in the diary. In addition, there is a memorial to Palmer, 1896, and a posthumous diploma, 1914, from the University of Alabama. The diary of Solomon Palmer, 1852-1893, contains Palmer, Law, and Bell genealogical information, and is autobiographical from 1839-1866. There are gaps. He generally made brief, descriptive entries that cover various events. Among the subjects discussed are: education, family illnesses, the U.S. Civil War, 1861-1865, service in the C.S.A., 19th Ala. Infantry Regiment, teaching school in Blount Co., being a lawyer and Justice of the Peace, the Ku Klux Klan, the growth of Birmingham, work for the Democratic Party, Grover Cleveland, service as a preacher, law partnerships, and the East Lake Atheneum. The diary also contains two sermons of Solomon Palmer, 1872; clippings, n.d.; gift cards, 1914 and n.d.; and brief diaries of Lyda and Maude Elizabeth Palmer. The diary of Lyda Palmer covers the period 1894 Oct. 31 only. There are also two undated photos of unidentified children. The diary of Maude Elizabeth Palmer, 1900-1904, discusses her life in Warrenton, Va., and in Ala., and primarily covers current fashion and trips she made. The clippings, n.d., contain information on Solomon Palmer, Sardenia A. Timmons, Lyda V. Palmer, poetry, and other subjects. The gift cards were all addressed to Virginia L. Palmer, and contained notes that accompanied gifts to her. An index to the diary precede the typescript copy of the diary.
